After researching CBD oils for my personal use, I encountered a phrase that is linked to the whole cannabis experience. That phrase is an “entourage effect.” Being inquisitive as I am; I had to know – what is the entourage effect?. I am inquisitive but cautious when it comes to my health. I am careful about which supplements I choose for my personal use. Making sure to make sure that what I am buying has good quality ingredients and is produced in such a way that I get the maximum benefit from the supplement. This has truly been a learning experience for me.
What Creates the Entourage Effect?
The amazing cannabis plant!
Numerous plant compounds make up the structure of the cannabis plant.
Cannabinoids are complex chemical compounds secreted by cannabis flowers. There are over 100 identified cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. The most prevalent in the cannabinoid spectrum is THC and CBD.
Cannabinoids, specifically THC and CBD, act on endocannabinoid receptors throughout the body to create a wide range of health benefits and results. Cannabinoids stimulate the endocannabinoid system to help maintain symptoms and restore balance to the system.
Terpenes are molecules made in the trichomes of the cannabis plant. There are over 200 identified terpenes in the cannabis plant. Terpenes are responsible for the amazing aromas that
plants produce. Terpenes also attract necessary insects that assist in pollination and deter unwanted insects and animals that may harm the plant. These impressive molecules also have a host of health benefits.
The entire network of cannabis plant compounds works together to modulate (help control) the overall psychoactive (affecting the brain) effects of the plant. This is beneficial to those seeking to use the plant for medicinal reasons and not the ‘high’ associated with isolated chemical compounds of the cannabis plant.
The phenomenon known as the ‘entourage effect’ is achieved when the individual compounds are left intact and allowed to work synergistically to maximize its potential, thus possibly providing a healthier, safer experience with cannabis.
How Does the Entourage Effect Benefit You?
Did you know that humans have an Endocannabinoid
The Endocannabinoid System:
- Endocannabinoid Receptors
CB₁: mostly, concentrated in the brain and central nervous system CB₂: mostly in the peripheral organs: especially cells associated with the immune system.
Endocannabinoids (cannabinoid-like compounds) made naturally by the body, bind to endocannabinoid receptors and are responsible for various biological processes.
Endocannabinoid Receptors (CB₁ and CB₂) are located within the endocannabinoid system. The CB₁ receptor is mostly concentrated in the brain and central nervous system. The CB₂ receptor is mostly in the peripheral organs: especially cells associated with the immune system. Cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, such as THC and CBD, bind to these receptors throughout our brain (receptor CB₁) and body (receptor CB₂). Each cannabinoid has its subsequent effect depending on which receptor it targets. This interaction can produce a wide array of health benefits and/or results. Cannabinoids from the cannabis plant may supplement a deficiency or help correct a problem in our endocannabinoid system by imitating endocannabinoids that are naturally present in the body.
Enzymes act as catalysts to produce chemical reactions that are necessary for the production of the plant as a whole.
Many believe that the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant work more efficiently in a full-spectrum formulation, thus creating the ‘entourage effect’. This may mean a more positive experience with CBD oils.
A quality full-spectrum CBD oil allows the multitude of plant compounds to enter the body and work
synergistically (a combined power that works together to achieve a
greater result). The full-spectrum of compounds will increase
bio-availability (the proportion of a drug or other substance which
enters the circulation when introduced into the body and so is able to
have an active effect) and absorption.
How are the Compounds Protected?
The common methods of processing the cannabis plant may damage the
plant’s compounds, therefore reducing the healthful benefits of CBD oil.
A preferred method, used by a select number of companies that produce CBD
oil, is a gentle heat-extraction method. This method allows the
compounds to remain at potent and efficient levels, thereby maintaining their
Choose a Quality CBD Oil
My research is specifically pertaining to CBD oil used for medicinal purposes and contains <0.3% THC. Here are some things to consider when choosing a quality CBD oils for your health needs:
- cannabis plant quality – farming methods matter in the finished product
- full-spectrum – a wide range of cannabinoids and plant components
- extraction method – cannabinoids, terpenes, and naturally occurring plant compounds should be left intact, as much as possible
- seller – a reputable company that is known for consistent quality ingredients and products and ethical business practices
